Thread: World Map (sort of a crossover project with Sapiento...)

Nice, I'm not fond of the land shapes, but I especially like the way you did forests and swamps on this one. Man, I would be so proud to be a co-worker with Sapiento!

Well, the land shapes are based on a close collaboration with the client, so he naturally always has the last word. *shrugs*

It's not like he called down from the heavens and chose me. The collaboration really is incidental.

Sooo... I think I've gotten reasonably good at this over the past year or so, but seeing the difference between my Multania and Sapiento's - even accounting for the necessarily lower amount of detail as I'm tryng to optimize this for print - has just reminded me of how much I respect you guys (and ladies, of course ) for all your skill and talent. Compared to the "original", I suppose, what I've got looks rather... I don't know, flat? Basic? Anyway, this is where I am at the moment with this piece.

I think you have a lot going for you on this map. Your mountains are really well done, the ground gradients for the most part are really good, especially like the swampy/river area, love the rocky outcroppings scattered about, and the dunes/hills middle area. The forests are really nice, although the small ones don't work as well and seem a little evenly scattered.

Lower left bigger island - since it's already a squarish shape and a lake in the middle, dividing the top two regions (dark brown top left, Mountain/dune top right), really creates a divided block feel, what if the dark brown was a little more subtle or a softer gradient into the other areas, same with "the glove". Could one of the lower forest be significantly larger on this lower area, they all seem the same size and evenly spaced around?

Water's edge is really a hard transition between shoreline and deeper water, could the shoreline have a little more transparency to allow the pattern to appear through? Although it looks good when I'm not zoomed in.

    Just thoughts?

Hey snodsy, thanks for the remarks. Sadly there's little I can do to change the overall coloration on Multania; Sapiento already drew what I'm using as a template, and his version is finished and approved by the client. Though I will do some color corrections once I'm done with the overall map. At the moment, I'm really just waiting for the client to provide all the necessary labels.

Looking nice so far! I like how dark the conifer forests are, but not how some of them are nearly black.

I don't really like the sea texture... It's also a bit repeating when zoomed out.

I suppose there's only so much one can do. The sea lineart is a 400x400 custom pattern; if I did the pattern by hand for a 9933x7016 map I'd probably go insane or lose a hand.

I wonder what it would look like without the pattern. I'm not suggesting doing it all by hand
