In German it's "
Prinz der Dunkelheit/König der Dunkelheit/Kaiser der Dunkelheit". Now the names make it sound like pulpy schlock (at least in German), but it's a very cool setting. Starts out as plainly medieval, then slowly opens up with fantasy elements, only to hit you with a shovel once you realize just exactly where (when?) it is set and what a lot of those places and things are that are talked about. I won't say more as that'd spoil the fun. I liked it; it's different, and as Lawrence's debut work (he's a researcher into AI in his day job) it's got a rather accessible style of writing. FAIR WORD OF WARNING, and I cannot capslock that enough: You will be witnessing the story through the eyes of a sociopathic killer, Prince Jorg of Ankrath, and while he opens up to become a characters with immense depth he is
not a nice guy, at all. If you cannot stand him, it won't be a series for you. Lawrence seems to have a knack for these kind of protagonists, though. In the follow up sequel/side-quel (?) the main character is a drinker, gambler, seducer of women and someone who would rather run away from a fight, given the chance, and it's still awesome.
