I think draft 1 looks better, though it seems to me to be only be half finished just yet.

Did you splodge a lot of darker trees on top of the paler trees... which would be the opposite of what I meant?

No problem if you did - I think you might just have discovered a joyful accident that's going to turn out a lot better than either of us anticipated.

The pattern you have created in draft 1 gives you the nice random curved shadows that are so difficult to actually draw when inking. If you now work only with the paler greens, and add quite a lot of new splodges, perhaps with more care, and as if you are planting individual trees, I suspect you might end up with an even better approximation of a jungle.

The only thing I would be careful about when you do it is that you appear to be creating a tree texture that suggests trees that are far bigger on the mainland than they are on the islands.

The way I had my brush settings it was generating random shapes and colors within a certain range, so yeah there are darker and lighter mixed.

Theoretically I can do another layer with a more narrow range of green (lighter).

This is a highly experimental technique, so we are both of us wandering around in the dark here.

If at any time you think its a dead end idea, please just say so. Don't whatever you do feel obliged for any reason to carry on regardless

    Wip Weekend update.

Well, I am taking Mouse's advice and moving on from the jungle (for now). I've decided that what I think I'm trying to achieve is just beyond my ability/skill. I tried a few different things this weekend and wasn't happy with anything. For now, I've settled on this. It's a few different textures, plus clouds and noise. Could be worse I guess.

Next I have to get back to the actual hamlet itself, though I'm not sure where to start. Maybe remove some of the current buildings and do more a few "hut style". The one problem is from this view I can't do a lot of detailing to the hamlet itself...probably warrants its own map.

    Anyway...happy Monday everyone!

I think you've got it anyway - the forest I mean.

Its much better than any of those that came before it

Sadly no updates the past two days. I stare at it...and stare some more. The town in its current state has is just dropped in place. I've been looking at other town maps to get an idea for layout but still come up with nothing. Like usual, I'm over thinking it which has now caused a delay.

So...I'm walking away temporarily. I've started my next map instead!

When you come back to it... and I sincerely hope that you do... maybe what is needed is some kind of focal point in the middle. a large and interesting island perhaps? Mind you, that would take a lot of re-drawing. You'd have to change the ocean and everything, so it's only a thought

I definitely will be coming back to it. What I'm going through right now is a bit of what I equate to "writers block". I can't collect my thoughts enough to make progress design wise. I think what I need to do is sketch some things out on paper first.

    I'll be back!

Poor AJ - you have my total sympathy. As a writer I know all about the infinitely broad and impossibly tall wall of mental concrete implied by those horrible words - 'writer's block'.
