i just used the built in plugin in gimp to remap the north half of the map
edit the pole
then remap back

gimp has had this tool -- well for ever , at least since 2000 / 2001 when i started using it

That's not a useful description. I see no such plugin.

built in as you do not need to install any third party plugin


Now you really only want to use the north or south half of the map other wise you will loose information in the image

That doesn't help at all. The maps I'm working from are not polar.
Obviously if you take an already equirectangular map you can get a polar version easily and edit the pole to make more circular.
I'm working with the originals which aren't polar and that doesn't work with to make them non polar unless i convert like 3 or 4 times... and it likely wouldn't match up anyways because they were never meant to be matched up like that. They just had to be fairly close to what a stereoscopic hemisphere map would look like...

Not sure whether the poles are just ice or if they are regular continents there so the rivers and such could be perfectly reasonable.
