Of particular interest on this topic is the conversion to and from zenith and nadir. It allows you to paint out that unsightly pinch at the poles. We use it in visual effects to remove the tripod from spherical panoramas.
That's great advice, than you- sounds like just the sort of toy I love to tinker with.
I'm just getting started here, you folks make such amazing maps it's inspiring!

Hi Midgardsormr,
Do you have any examples of this online you could point to?
I'm wondering if we're doing the exact same thing or if there's some subtle difference that I might learn from.
Also, aside from just making pretty fantasy maps I'm guessing that some people here are real purists who know all about real maps and what constitutes technical consistency or horrible blunder- anyone spring to mind as an authority on the more serious cartography stuff?
I'm thinking it would be good to get some critical feedback on anything posted, to enhance it's quality.
Thanks,
Runninghead

Hai-Etlik is the one I'd go to for serious technical matters.
Here's a tutorial about tripod removal on Flaming Pear's site: http://www.flamingpear.com/flexify-f...g-tripods.html
You would use the exact same process for fixing the poles on a map (assuming you started from equirectangular).
And a list of projections that the plug-in can manipulate: http://www.flamingpear.com/flexify-example1.html

i used clone and a gimp plugin called "resysenthiser " to inpaint the north pole and the Comic book cartoon map
and the clone tool
heal also is good for this kind of thing , but using it is more a art form than by the numbers
gimp is good for most things that DO NOT need to be very accurate or other projections than polar stereographic
for that Qgis and GDAL work great
or for less accurate( but rather close) the example i posted a few posts up . using MMPS to remap
and these tools are free
that photoshop plugin costs $54 USD

Thanks Mid & John, I'll try to run something by the Hai-Etlik should I get something worth looking at together. I'll also look in to the FP plugin, though I too like to do everything for free I'm already paying £50 pcm for Adobe CC! (Need it for work).
Not sure what you mean by the Comic book cartoon map John- any images? Just curious. Thanks for the replies guys- I'm already impressed by what a great forum CG seems to have going on here. I never guessed there'd be so many people who share my attraction to cartographic creativity.

Cheers, that's a beautiful map- I like the retro colouration. Sorry if I'm not following well- is it your work or were you helping someone out with the advice? Either way, thanks for posting the links.
The subtle halftone texture really makes it.
Seems like I'd better be careful with my poles, though in the past (making spherical jigsaw puzzles for Ravensburger) I've just fudged it with pretty rough cloning!
The flaming pear plugin did tempt me, looks like it'd make dealing with poles a breeze. I've got to get some stuff together to post myself tomorrow, time to brush up my act.
