Apprentice Cartographer

Hey all,

I've been gaming for 31 years mostly drawing my own maps by hand on my wet erase battlemap. Times are changing and I find most of my gaming now seems to take place on VTT like Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. After scouring the interwebs for content that fits close to what I want/need I decided I should at least start learning how to make my own maps. So I downloaded GIMP and started reading and watching tutorials.

The system I'm currently running is a DnD 5e game based on the Old 2nd ed setting of Spelljammer. So I need to work on deckplans and galaxy maps. So if anyone has advice or experience in this area and are willing to give some advise or links to great tutorials it would be appreciated.

Hi Frost, and welcome to the Guild.

There are plenty of tutorials in the Tutorials/How To area of the forums, though I suspect many of them will be more regional or town/city guides. Gamerprinter does a whole load of deckplans/star ships, so maybe something there will inspire you. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but if you're stuck with something, best thing is to start a thread in one of the work-in-progress folders and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

That's strange. Not sure what happened there. Maybe some sort of search request expiry/time out.

a bit of advice
Gimp is almost done with a FULL rewrite of the code
Gimp2.8 is VERY VERY different under the hood than gimp 2.4 or 2.6

and old guides for gimp 2.4 , might not work the same

the menus have changed

now the basics there are the same and Photoshop or gimp use the same basic things and tools

it is HOW they go about doing it that is very different
