    Default The Harbour of Lington

    Hey there,

so here is a new thing I have finally found time for the last couple of days.
For quite some time now I've been playing with the idea of making a map with a more functional/less illustrative look to it, which puts its focus on the water instead of the land. For some reason I thought this was really interesting

This is my attempt of reducing the details on the land to a minimum, while exploring all the things that might be going on on the water and creating a map that looks like a functional guide for navigating around the area of a harbour.

Would love to hear your thoughts

That is absolutely great, considering the effect you wanted to achive. The land mass and sea are consistent style. Looks very pleasant.

That's really awesome! It totally makes sense and it's easy to figure out what's going on. Love it.

Love the idea, one that I've thought of as well, showing what goes on underwater, you've done a really nice job making the water the emphasis, rep worthy here.

Extremely aesthetically pleasing, and functionally very easy to read. I barely had to look at the legend to understand it. But I am curious that it seems the docks on the mainland or the northern land masses are outside of the waterway? I may just be unfamiliar with what the definition of waterway is.

    This looks wonderful Mat.
I think you achieved your goal very well here.
The colors are quite well chosen and the whole thing looks great.
I especially like the translucent legend and the blur it causes over the land.
All around fine job on this piece.

    Voolf - Thank you!

Diamond - Thank you, that is what I was hoping for!

    snodsy - Thanks, snodsy!

UrbaNick6 - Well, I am not a sailor or anything, so I didn't really stick to any official definitions. Although I looked at some nautical maps (and one guide book on how to read nautical charts), I kind of made up my own rules for this world. My thought here was that general traffic should keep within the borders of the waterway, while ships that are docking or undocking can leave/enter the waterway around the docks. (So ships that are "just" passing don't come too close too the docks and make the docking procedure more difficult)

    Ilanthar - Thank you!

J.Edward - Thanks! I'm glad you like it!

Really cool map ! I love the parchment title and the depiction of depth is a real win. The magnetic compass is also a nice touch.
