I still have to mod it further to get the field turned back on for profile editing. I also need to put up a notification that says how to get your website in yoru profile since its not there during registration.

I'd be interested in knowing how you did it once it's all done. If you don't mind sharing, that is...

Have you looked into the Turing test technology? That seems to be the dominant anti-bot tech that is being used, and from what I've seen there is a phpBB module to implement it.

Nope. Not even heard of it. Where can I find out more about it? Is it a bot too?

You can search for captcha engine and/or Turing test to see what the terms mean, but basically a Turing test is a test to determine if something is actually human (very watered down explanation). The captcha engine was developed to give a computer a way to make this determination.

Here is a site you can check out to get an idea:
    http://forge.octo.com/jcaptcha/confl...y/general/Home

I'm sure you have seen them by now. You are presented with a distorted image of letters and numbers and you have to enter them to prove you are not a bot.

    Well I can tell you.
A friend and I am running a big german D&D site with an extensive phpbb forum too and we also have a lot problems with spambots.
Some extensions (from the phpbb site) and some handmade fixes by my friend who does the technique stuff did made the issue better, but from time to time there are still some spam attacks.

I think that this won't be better until the devs of phpbb do something about that in their code.

anyways, I would also be glad about every good tipp on this topic
Come to where the kobolds are...
