Storm - if you happen to be looking for a way to add a 'coastline' a sharp dark glow on the inside (placed above the outer glow effects in the listing on that sheet) will appear to be a line around the edge of the land. High percentage + short glow
You're right jfrazierjr - I do use CC3, but I also use GIMP like you do nowadays and create most of the textures I use in my CC3 maps in Genetica. I'm creating the background in GIMP for my current section of the Guild City map, and importing it to CC3 for all the structural components, which are very much easier to draw in CC3 than they are in GIMP.
The Herwin Wielink style that Storm is using is one of the more attractive styles of the basic sets, but there are limitations as to what a single style can do on its own. I think earlier in the thread a decision was made to replace the relatively wrinkly HW desert fill (and believe me it really is quite wrinkly with a lot of redundancy over a large area like that) with one from a different style, which may be why the mesa in the desert look a bit too 'sudden'.
Its all a matter of personal taste I suppose, and I am not sure how I would change anything to suit my own taste, except to cover the basic land fill (the olive green with lots of diagonal lines) with grassland cover (which is a lot smoother and doesn't have those lines on it), and alter the HSL of the oddball desert fill just a tiny bit to bring it closer to the colour and tone of the original HW desert fill. That, however, might not be what mrjane wants
EDIT: The problem with aliasing is the scale of the bitmap texture fill, but where a repeating pattern may emerge if the scale is set too small most of us CC3 mappers try to push the scale as large as we can without it looking pixelated. Each fill has 4 resolutions. It may be that Storm has her map set up to use only the Hi res fills, rather than the Very Hi res fills.

Hey guys! Sorry I've been gone so long!!! My internet cafe moved beyond my travel scope, making it impossible to get to it, so getting online suddenly became very scarce for a while! And then a sudden opportunity came up that gave us a chance to leave the 'slum' apartment complex we where living in, and into a HOUSE in another town... so there was a mad scramble to pack and move ourselves! So I have been COMPLETELY out of the loop for the past couple of months.
I'm still not completely moved in, so things will still be crazy for the next week or two, but I'm hoping after that, I can settle back into finishing this map!
A couple of things I should address -
@jfrazierjr - What Mouse told you is right... the texture that I'm using for the dessert area is a completely different texture from what the Herman Weilink style has( the style I'm using to make this map). I don't use all those fancy programs that many mappers have, and while I do have Gimp, I haven't learned to use it, yet, because I've been focussing on using cc3+. I have the repetition stretched as far as I can, without it pixelating.... plus I have multiple layers so that I could fade them into each other, to create the dessert the size the client needed. I have a couple of other things I'm going to attempt... such as a color wash, or more like a color bleed... to leech out some of the 'orangeness' of that dessert sand. I just don't know if I will be able to figure out how to do it. The area to the East of Kayn is sort of scrubland... not dessert, but arid, and that's what the client wants .
@Mouse - hey hon! Yes, I know I still have to work somthing out with the land edges... I've tried a couple of things, I just didn't like the way they look. I'm trying to avoid that dreaded 'raised land mass' look... plus I didn't want a 'defined' edge... so again, I'm trying a few things.... I will com
e up with something before I call this map finished.
@mrjane- For the city and town icons... yes, I can come up with something better than plain dots . I have quite a few village, town and city icons to choose from, and I
intend to use those.
For the shrines... I will see what I have to make the shrines look more like stalagtites (or stalagmites, I always get confued which is which!). They may end up looking like ancient towers, though... but I will see what I can come up with.
The wall is going to be another story... I don't have anything for walls in the Herman Weilink style, I don't think. I may have to get a little creative and adaptive for that one... it will be interesting to see what I come up with!
The Grinning Sea - I will see what I can do to make the sea look more like a sea. Perhaps if I cut some of the land away from the 'river'....
Last thing... that font. I don't own that font, so if you want me to use it, you will have to let me know how to get ahold of it. I'm going to have to install it onto my computer, to be able to use it in cc3+. One word of caution, though... I won't be able to use it for the whole map. Maybe the Title, and the the legend title... but if I use it much more than that, it will become an eyesore, trust me! I do, however, have quite a few different fonts, so maybe in what I do have, we can find something that works.
Anyway, hopefully I will be able to get back to work on this some time next week, and we can get this finished up! I look forward to hearing from you!

Great to see you in better housing! And just as good to see you online again. Onward and upward and all of that good stuff!

Welcome back, and congrats on the improved situation!
I'm glad to hear from you ladiestorm. I almost thought you'd left me behind. Good to hear you've improved your situation. A step up in life is always nice. I look forward to the changes/additions you mentioned. As for the font, just use whatever you think works best. That's what I did. I'm not too picky. Or just leave the text off and I'll add it later. Either is fine with me.
Hey ladiestorm! Haven't heard from you in awhile. I thought I'd check in and see how things are going?
Hello mrjane
I haven't heard from Storm in a while myself, but I thought I'd just say 'hi' to let you know your voice is heard
