    Wip Marshford (Town Practice Map)

After Karl recently did his excellent Stonewall town practice map I took this as a wakeup call and have since started working on a town map of my own. I really haven't done enough maps like this, and it's way past time to get some experience in this field.

Nice start! You've got beautifully clear linework.

That's certainly a great start. Are you going to fill the top left corner with something - islands, or information perhaps?

A river, a dam, a mill, a swampy area, a ruined bridge, an old cemetary, the edge of a forest - if I manage to squeeze it all in.

    LOL!

When I first looked at your map I thought: that's nice - bit empty at the top, though

Now I'm worried you might not be leaving enough space for it all.

Bleh, long day at work, so I'm tired and didn't get much done. Just a few trees and a ruined bridge.

Pfew, just a quick pre-work update. Add the mill and the basic outline of the swampy area. I'm not happy with the overall strength of the roof lineart. Seems a bit too dominant to me at the moment.

Okay, I need some feedback here. I've been playinga round with the design for roofs and would like to know which of three I have so far you like the most.

No. 1 is the one I originally drew.

No. 2 I added yesterday because I wasn't sure if No. 1 wasn't too dominant, adding too much black to the map.

No. 3 is the polar opposite to that thought; a lot more pronounced black, but also a lot less blurry than No. 1, giving each roof more detail (I might even hide the outlines of the houses below, thus really making each house individual), but also being a lot more labor-intensive.

What do my fine fellow cartographers think?

Each and every one is unique. Those lines define the material used for the roof. In the big city you most definately find not only roof made from tiles but also a wood one, maybe some flat too. So try to use more then one. Map will have more depth.

As for the styles, i prefer #1 with the light tiling accent, but still its ok to make it more intense in some building like in #3. It is a good way to emphasize major or important buildings in the city. #2 is also ok. I would guess those roofs are made from wood as rest of the building and can represent poor district, or simple houses.

Variety is the key to an interesting city. Size variations as well, and height variations (shown by shadow later on)

I'd use all three, and then add some more variations on top of that
