This is already outstanding. And the shading will improve it a lot I think,

Haha, exactly. I really hope that colour and shade will kill the extreme contrast here and it will be 'easier' to watch.

Thanks i have been studying my inspirational folder and come to realisation that this kind if trees looks best in close region map. At least for me.

    Thanks.

Here is an update. Couple of additions to the left side along with a path and some grass. The shrine square is a sand-ish flat ground, so i scatter a subtle dots around. Next on the list is probably water lines. Also, i guess i have to work on more trees to the right side.

    Thank you Tilt

I think that's it. The lines are done. I am not convinced to the pond waves though. Water usually stay still in such small pond, but.... whatever i could not find better solution .

As you can see it seems i forced myself yet to draw a chunk of Kyoto map which will indicate the location of the Shrine. I dont have an idea how to depict the map yet.
On the left side i am planning to do the legend or key, dont know how you called it in english. Anyway i put the names of places marked as small circles.
Lastly i am left with small white area on the left bottom corner. Originally there are some buildings with wide parking lot and i decided not to draw it. To fill the blank area, i think compass would fit?

When I read what you said about the pond before looking at the map, I was afraid... but when I saw the pond I breathed a sigh of relief. Its perfect - as is everything you do

Haha, sorry if i got you worried . The waves are fine by me. My concern was more about how to depict still water. I remember i had simillar problem with my first map here Baba Yaga's Hut. In the end i did not draw any lines, just went with some filters. I am not going to do that this time.

Still water from above is just really dark. As you can see from this extract from Google Earth of the local bird reserve where I live. The water isn't all that deep - probably no deeper than your pond. The water at the top of this picture is still water, while the water at the bottom is affected by tidal flows and the sediment is regularly stirred up.

I think I remember you saying you were looking at an Ariel photo of the shrine? How dark/light does the water look on that compared to the surrounding ground and trees?

I don't know what style you are going to use to shade and colour your map, but if its at all photorealistic you could use a bit of artistic licence and landscape the floor of the pond with mud colours, and then overlay a gradient fill of brown or blue, depending on how muddy the actual water is?

    You could add lilies?

Well it looks very simillar to the top one on the photo you showed.

Water is not muddy, but looks green because its shallow with lots of green stuff growing on the bottom. Also water reflects all the grass and trees that are around.

I am not worrying about colour so much, as to how to draw water that dosen't move. Ponds like that do not have waves, unless there is a wind and even then, the waves creates different pattern that moves the same direction as the wind. They dont start in the center and go all directions to the bank (which i drew).

I just dont know how to draw that

There is nothing, but reflection, so how "to sell" the effect of water without waves? I won't draw a reflection in top down view.
