Default General map-creation techniques and tools question...

    Hello fellow Cartophiles,

I'm relatively new to this site, and I am working on some maps for my own recreation - gaming and what not. My question to the seasoned pros is what are the typical tools used to create city maps or continental maps? Are there common programs many map-makers use to render their work? How much is hand-drawn? Where can I ask such questions as what filter is used in this map to achieve an effect, or what are your standard methods in creating a map in photoshop?

I'm posting this question here as I'm unsure if it belongs someplace else. Any and all replies appreciated.

    Eric

    Hi Eric,
here is as good a place as any ... I believe that every cartographer has his own way of doing things. Personally I like to make a rough sketch on paper first - just to get my bearings. Sometimes I flesh the city (or whatever) out a lot - and sometimes I just mark the general areas. Then I use my go-to-program, which for me is Photoshop. I take a snap of the map I mad with the phone (quicker than a scanner) and then import it and start "inking" in the lines in photoshop. If its a detailed drawing I might scan it instead, but I usually only have a sketch.
If you have a specific question about an effect or a style - check out who the artist is and ask in a private message or directly in the WIP or Finished map thread - most people in here share tips gladly - which you can check out in our many tutorials

    Good luck on your mapping

Vaxfiend, you should hit up the Tutorials area of the forum. There are lots of tutorials that describe basic techniques for mapmaking. The majority are for either Photoshop or Gimp, but a browse through the folder will probably reveal a lot of buried goodies.

There are a bunch of PDF tutorials for download in this thread.
