If you just want a whole world in equirectangular projection, save as a special mdr format. It can write data to the limits of your patience and disk space.

If all you want is a heightmap for WM, you can open an MDR in Wilbur and use that program to export a PNG. The 64-bit version of Wilbur can handle a map in your preferred size, especially with all the RAM you have. It's one extra step (and for whatever reason, MDRs exported from FT open upside-down in Wilbur, though that's easy to fix), but you still get your heightmap in the end.

i do a lot of work with BIG images , but i would not expect ft,wilbur,or WM to handle a full planet map of 16384x8192 or bigger
    by big i mean 65536x32768

In addition to the special mdr type, there should be a raw raster type that wm can ingest directly.

I'm not sure I understand this. In FT, using File>>Save As with the type "Raw Binary File" will save a file as large as you wish. Pick the "16-bit Integer Output" checkbox on the dialog where it asks you for image width and the output will be a raw raster of signed 16-bit height values in Plate Caree projection. There is no color information produced during this process, just height information.
