Thread: The markgravate of Greifshold - first attempt at a campaign map

Thank you -Jo- , much obliged. I think the dragon is my favourite element so far. I want to add an Ettin and maybe sea serpent, too. Maybe an other creature on the left side. Any suggestions? It is a forested world, so any foret creature could work. As those fantastic beasts don't need to be in scale everything goes. Maybe a mushroom man?

Onward we go. I inked the map using all my hobby time this week.

After sketching the map out last week I made some final adjustments and proceeded with the inking. As you can see there is a significant difference between sketch and final version.
I think the fantastical beasts turned out well and should convey to players what awaits them in the dark forest.

Next up is scanning the line art in and then colorising it. I think this will really make stuff pop and delineate the different elements nicely. I thought of a similar watercolor wash style as my other area map, only a tad less saturated.

    The map in its entirety:

The city of Greifshold, with the small fishing village Breka to the east and the remains of a temple of the sun god to the north. Deep under the sea they say a serpent waits to swallow trade vessels whole.

In the west travelers report of sentient mushrooms, defending their territory fiercely. Some say a mushroom king holds court on a throne made of precious stones and pure gold.

Finally the coat of arms of the Margravate of Greifshold. After crushing the rebellion of local tribes the Margrave altered the coat of arms to show a tower, symbolising Herleva's Stand, the last refuge of the rebels and the place where the rebellion as well as its leader died. The oak tree is an older symbol, representing wise rulership, steadiness and strength. The Griffon Ebonquill was the loyal mount of the Margrave when he first established the margravate a good hundred years ago. Many of the local tribes submitted readily to his rule, impressed by the might of this creature, others were subdued and felt its sharp talons and beak. Its remains were placed in a sarcophagus and rest now beside the bones of the margrave and margravine.

I love how evocative this map is! What a wonderful way to express a mountain range and some very dangerous places on a map. Excellent work!
