Awesome! Looking forward to this
It's been a while since I put up a WIP thread here (most of my maps are all made in the same style so not much point showing WIPs of them), so here's my latest experiment, the Elyden Mappa Mundi
old map.jpg
My intention is to get something similar to the Hereford Mappa Mundi (hence the unimaginative name :p ). This will require a lot of freehand and I'll probably draw most of the details by hand on paper and scan them into PS where I'll integrate them with the map. This is a very rough WIP, and much is likely to change before I finish it - the text is still Lorem Ipsum, though will be fleshed out once I progress. The map itself will be quite text-heavy with lots of little write-ups added next to the graphics. I want to try and get an authentic as possible antique finish to make it look really old and weathered. though the base colours I'll be using are browns, most of the weathering will come later, once the image has been flattened. we'll see
It's quite big, over 1 metre square and I had to shrink the map down to about 20% of the actual size to fit on the site.
to those unfamiliar with the Hereford mappa mundi, here's the real thing:

I agree, looking forward to watching your progress Nate
Will you be making it less detailed like most all of the Mappa Mundi maps?
That is something I can sometimes have trouble with.. simplifying to an earlier age of the map.

This looks like a terrific project

No one is ever a failure until they give up trying
most certainly. For one i need to retract the coastline anyway as back when this map would have been created in-world, the coastline would have been many miles inland, as much as 50 - 75 miles in shallow places, so it needs to be changed in that respect anyway. Once I o that I intend on distorting and simplifying the coastline to make it look 'simpler'. Ame applies for the rivers, with them only vaguely being in the 'right' place

Very beautiful map <3
Consider also the level of knowledge and the culture making the map ... for example the culture x coukd have more detailed description and knowledge of their surrounding lands and less of far away ones... eventually large terrains could be shrienked to narrow lands due to poor knowkedge of the territory and the relative dimensions.
