It's looking great, THW. The mountains are excellent.

    Thanks ChickPea and Diamond.

I've been slowly plugging away at this map. I've completed all of the mountains now (although I might need to go back and redo some of them).

Thing is, I've hit a bit of a stumbling block. I'm trying to figure out how to do the hills in a nice painterly style, and I'm just not getting it. And while there's plenty of tutorials on mountains and forests, hills have been somewhat neglected in terms of tutorials. So, can anyone offer me some advice on how to paint hills on this map? I've added a small snapshot of the map, for reference.

    Thanks,

Maybe break them up a bit more instead of having the long, worm-like shapes

Just make them like the mountains ... just shorter and rounder.

Here's an update on this map. It's been extremely slow progress, but I think the finishing line is in sight now. My client is exceptionally patient, for which I am very very grateful.

What do you think of it now? Any comments or critiques to help me make it better?

Lots of good ideas here : the forests, the hills...
The complicated rivers network is very well thought and painted
    I'm taking notes !

This is exactly what I was gonna say. Like the mountains, but softer, and not necessarily stone-grey.

I absolutely love what you've done here! I'm just a bit in doubt about the transition between the mountains and the foot hills. Foothills usually are the natural extensions of the mountains and here it looks like they're separated from one another by a valley. Maybe it's the shading? Maybe it's the colour? In any case, if you have the time, try and blend both of them in a little bit. It might turn this already great piece into a masterpiece!

I know what you mean about those transition areas, Chashio. I'd been meaning to tidy them up a bit, and my latest update has already covered a lot of that work.

Here's an update: I've added some texture to the rivers and lakes (the sudden transition from the dark to light will be fixed in the next update), and finished painting the river edges. The main work though, has been on making the hills look more realistic.

As always, critiques and comments are welcome
