    Default [WIP] Oakville

    Hello hello,

Some days back I was contacted by someone to make a map for a movie treatment. The funny thing is that they will probably use the same studio as they used for Stars Hollow, the town where Gilmore Girls takes place.

So for me this is a kind of return to one of my previous maps and I thought it'd be nice to share some WIP shots (:

So this is the sketch I got from my client:

    Client Sketch.jpg

From there I decided that I didn't want to copy my previous map and went for an isometric perspective. Another reason for this decision is that the map is due Thursday, so I didn't want to spend to much time on getting the perspective right. This also means that I'll have to be creative with the locations of the structures.

    Here's my first draft version:

    Oakville 1.jpg

This draft has been approved by the client, who, so far, is very happy with my work ;D The next step will be to do the linework. The map is not going to be colored, so after that is just a matter of shading and labeling the map.

As always, let me know what you think!

Looking good so far. Nothing like a super-rushed project to make you sweat! If I could make one suggestion, it would be to reduce the size of the railroad track. That would be one massive train...

Oh joy! Another map from Dan! It's looking wonderful already.
Do you draw all those buildings without any grid or anything?

Thank you Diamond! It's indeed a very short deadline, but I'll just take it as a challenge! ;D Thank you for you suggestion, I'll certainly decrease the size of those tracks. I also noticed that the clocktower and church seems large than the other buildings. I'll correct that in the next version.

Thank you Josiah! I actually use an isometric grid for this. I got the one that I use form fantasy-maps.com, but any iso grid will do (:

And here's an update with the line work finished.

Next step is to add labels, a legend and a title/town sign.

Let me know what you think!

    Looks wonderful. You work fast!
Impeccable iso perspective, really great work.
The way everything is so perfectly ordered and gridlike makes it seem a little videogame-esque (like simcity or something of that sort)

Thank you Josiah! I thought the same thing as I watched the map shaping up.

Here's the latest version of the map.

The client decided he wanted to get a colored version as well, so I'll be continuing to color this one.

As always, let me know what you think!

Edit: I only just now realized that I started this thread in the Regional/World mapping subforum. If any of the CL's reads this, please move this thread to the Town/City Mapping subforum. Thanks in advance!

That is looking great - much more reasonable railroad tracks.

    And thread moved, too.

    Thank you kindly, sir!

So here's the first colored version of the map.

    Oakville Color 1.jpg

I think this one is pretty much finished. The only thing that I'm not sure of is the grass areas. They look very empty and dull, but if I add more details to those areas it'll break with the rest of the map. Ay suggestions on how to fill those areas?

As always, let me know what you think!
