This is the fun bit. I wanted to know if it would look realistic or not. I think its about half and half. Some aspects about the way the water flows in and out look good but there is no momentum on the water so it doesn't slosh in and withdrawl properly - water would stick around on the flat bits for longer. And if the surf texture could work out where in the past time it was white and stay white surf then it would help too. But I like it near to the rock pools area that bit looks good. I guess where the water is sloshing up some incline of more than 20 degrees then it looks right as it pulls back out under gravity. It would be nice to see this in my 3D viewer but that doesnt handle animated textures and I have no intention of making it so either. It does handle automated loading of the texture so I could do a frame load it in 3D, save the screenie of it and keep doing that in some kind of script but thats a bit of a pain to set up. Also, I havent tested that feature of it for what must be at least 5 years now.

I am definitely going to hang on to this shader definition tho. I can see this coming in handy for a number of other scenes that I could do with water in it.

That animation is insanely good. I went back and re-read your initial entry, which made me appreciate it all the more.

Thanks very much aeshnidae - its good to know that some people have liked it.

I was in the area a few days back and went back into the museum and took a truck load of photos of the mosaic from every angle to ensure that I had it in better detail. They also had some displays of other roman artifacts like a roman coin hoard which was found. They had all the coins spread out in a pile under some plexiglass cabinet type thing. So I took some photos of that too. Its quite hard to find piles of old coins to make up a nice texture. So if anyone is looking to do a map of a dragon sat on top of piles of gold then you may want to use the texture I made below. I know I should have had more gold in the map but I was at a loss of where to put it. The archaeologist is not going to leave it lying around for the sea to wash away and I dont think he would pile it up on deck either. Well if there is a shortage of gold in the map then maybe this can offset it !

Many of the photos were of the border tesserae too but it would be a bit of effort to line them all up and stitch together. If anyone wants them then let me know but otherwise ill hang on to them. I looked at the map texture for the mosaic and I dont think it would be greatly improved by swapping it for this better photo of it. So I might as well leave it as is. If people think that it would look better then shout !
