    If you have such things as house contents insurance over in the US, and there's one on the contents of the house, you might be surprised what it covers. If there is such a thing, then check it and see if it covers accidental damage to valuable items.

    My brother has renters insurance but I'm not sure what it covers. I'll check with him when he gets off work tomorrow

    Is the hard drive completely busted? They look pretty sturdy but I never dropped one.
    Some companies offer to retrieve data from a damaged hard drive. That could be a solution.

    Yeah, even if the drive is a bit damaged, it's amazing how much stuff can still be recovered. I lost a computer in a fire and the company I brought the drive to was still able to recover something like 65% of my data, including most of my font files, from this charred hunk of metal.

    Ah, sorry to hear about your little accident. That sucks. I hope you're able to replace the computer sometime soon.
