It can be any fill you like.

If you want to get a nice hand drawn feel to it all, though, you would do very well to use a parchment or paper of some kind. The grey in the parchment would subtly tone down the glaring electronic "ouchy-ouch-ouch-that's-so bright-I-can't-see-what-colour-it-really-is" in any colours you add on top of the map as a whole, and bring everything together nicely

Adding colours like faded watercolour washes is very simple once you've set the file up to multiply the background over the top of the map. You just add another sheet on top of that again, draw solid fill colour patches on it (use a separate sheet for each colour), and add Edge Fade Inner and Blend Mode effects (Blend mode preferably set to Multiply again to prevent the colour from being paler than the paper), and away you go

Some of the solutions offered above are rather fascinating, and I can see myself playing with them in FM8 under circumstances. (Those who wish to point a shotgun in my direction may do so. My real name is Clark Kent. I'm not worried.) However, for what you're trying to do, these solutions all seem to me to be cases of a long way to Tipperary. They also are blanket solutions which could cause problems when you don't want a solution that applies to everything. The much easier solution, I think, is simply to copy the original symbols and make the opaque areas in them transparent. Showing you how to do that, of course, poses a bit of a problem here an the forum. The symbols in question are copyrighted, licensed symbols. You and I both have a license to use them, but we have no license to post those symbols here. In fact, doing so would be totally illegal according to specific terms of our licenses. Therefore, I'd prefer to do it legally and show you how by private E-Mail, where it's unnecessary to post a sample symbol because you already have it legally. This process is as easy as 1-2-3 and can be done in a few minutes time, so even if you no longer need the solution, keep it in case it comes up in the future. I'll pass it on soon.

Well, this may not be exactly what I was going for originally, but it's turning out not so bad I altered the colors even more, and I think I have a decent mix. I'm starting to add some different types of elements, wildlife and civilization to my little island, and I've decided this is a little island kingdom, very small and not very populated. there will be a few towns and such, but nothing much. So that's where I'm taking it at the moment.

Oh, and yes, I know my symbols are oversized for the rest of the map. This is intentional... in fact, my town symbol needs to be sized up to match the rest.

Nice improvements Storm. I can now see that I was misinterpreting your hills as smaller mountains and the aqua that I thought was representing low hills is actually grassy plains. Oh well, it all looks better now.

That's looking a lot more under control now I don't think you have any octarine left on the map

It is still a little on the bright side, however, and there is a bit of a clang going on between land and sea because of that very brightness.

How about trying a single Hue Saturation Lightness sheet effect on both those sheets and setting the saturation level to 15 or so?

(In case anyone is thinking surely that will make the colours even more luminous, in CC3 an HSL Sheet effect adds greyness if you put a positive number in the saturation box)

A saturation value of 15 should just about manage to take the knife edge off those colours and make them more friendly towards one another

Looking good. Really beginning to pick up steam and flow now. After watching your last map challenge come to the finish, I am really waiting to see the final touches that make her complete.

I've decided to keep this map simple. Relatively so. There isn't much to it, and there's not really supposed to be. I may continue to tweak it here and there, but it's pretty much finished.

It may not be up to my usual standards... but it's something different from me, and it's a step toward something that I've been wanting to try. It's a process. And I will get it there... I know I will. Just not with this map

    That's looking great, Storm

Is there any chance that you might consider making the frame a bit bigger at the top so its not squashing the title quite so much?

Looks good Storm! I got a chuckle when I spotted that Trout jumping out of the lake! Reminded me of an LL Bean catalog.
