I believe you have stumbled upon one of the greatest quandaries of mapping.
Choosing a font is very often a matter of personal taste, and there will never be a single font that everyone will love when they see it on your map.
Just stay away from Papyrus and Comic Sans, and choose one that reflects the time period and genre of your map - remembering to chose the one that's most easily read at the size you want to do your labels.
Maps usually look better if you use only one, or at most two fonts (one for the labels and one for the title in the latter case).
Don't go crazy with neon colours for fear that they will never show up (unless the entire map is done in neon colours). If you can see them clearly, than so can most of us.
