svg is a kind of vector file (I think)

I'm not sure I understand why you would want to transport the labels from Inkscape to GIMP as jpg. They wouldn't have a transparent background any more if you did that. png is ideal!

    *confused expression*

However, just for the record, if you want to convert a png to jpg just open the png in GIMP and re-export it as jpg. As simple as that.

EDIT: You ninja'd me I'm glad to see that you have managed to salvage something from the merging. At least you have this latest version if nothing else works over the next couple of days

Thanks Mouse. I'm really broken-brained today.
I still don't understand about the transparent thingy though.
If I somehow manage to turn the background transparent.... won't the line work be hanging around too? Or, since it's been imported, will only what I've been doing with Inkscape be sen?
    I'm going crazy. Stark crazy.

Well, guess I'll leave it like that, if the labels are visible. Can forget about banishing those green lines tho.
Guess what? My fingers are twitching to make a label. By hand.

    Ok.

    One thing at a time

Without getting all technical on you, a jpg is smaller in the memory and therefore easier to upload here to display. However, it can't record areas of transparency, which is why its always better to work at all times with PNGs so you never end up accidentally cancelling out any transparent bits of a graphic that are important to you.

I believe the general intention of all the instructions you have received in this and other similar threads is that a bitmap (png or jpg - doesn't actually matter in this one instance) of the artwork is exported from GIMP and used as a background image in Inkscape to enable you to generate labels on a separate layer, which can then be exported without the background back into GIMP, where you can add glows or drop shadows. When the labels are exported the background map needs to be hidden so that only the labels are visible. The png export should automatically create a png file containing nothing but the labels set on a transparent background. You then import that png back into the GIMP file (Open as new layer), and work on it there.

    Does that help?

Looks like it does Mouse. I'll try as soon as I can. Thanks again.

I wouldn't worry about it too much

    So does this work?
I did it all wrong lol. I added the labels with inkscape, then cut the map out, and exported the labels onto gimp. then I added the 'glows' with an airbrush!

I installed some Photoshop-style effects in Gimp, and one of them is Outer Glow. It works very well, if you want to try it?

I'm glad you managed to get your labels exported from Inkscape. I use Inkscape all the time for labelling, so if you're stuck with something, just holler.

Thanks chickpea! I'll probably use them for my next digital map, but now I'm wasted.
The main thing I'm struggling with in inkscape is glows .
I think it's too late (I've lost my patience with this map - if it was on paper it might be bearing some wounds from my frustration (my computer screen will wear them for now))
So there isn't a nice glow effect on Inkscape? As usual I'm a bit headached...

Here's how you can achieve a glow effect (tested on Inkscape 0.91 on Mac):

After you have your text object in place, duplicate it (Ctrl-D) -> Alt-click somewhere on the text to select the object that's underneath -> change its color to white (or light cream or something) -> go to the menu Filters -> Blurs -> Blur... -> Play with the parameters or leave the default -> Apply.

Hope it helps and it's clear enough, I tested it quickly now, gotta go... Will be back later, let me know if I can help further.
