    Default New to cartography

I never know how to "introduce" myself on forums. It seems like such a strange thing to do. What with social media platforms being so informal and all, it seems strange to say hello, and not just jump into the middle of a conversation. But I suppose it is the polite thing to do. After all, I am new here. I wouldn't just walk up to a random table at a bar and start asking questions, and giving my two cents on things.

So hello Cartography Guild. I'm Kyle, and I am extremely interested in what you guys do. I made my first map for a D&D campaign I'm DMing a few weeks ago, and I was instantly hooked. I have always been fascinated by the maps at the beginning of fantasy novels. I never thought I could make one myself though, until I did. Granted, it wasn't the most beautiful thing in the world, but I did it. I was super proud of it too. I even showed it to one of my players, which in hindsight, I probably should not have done, but I couldn't help myself. I think I'm going to be redoing it anyhow.

So that's why I am here. To learn from you fine folk, to ask questions, and to hopefully get some cool brushes. I used Gimp for that first map, and will probably continue to do so for the time being. I would eventually like to learn how to draw them by hand though.

I'll see you all around the forums then. I plan on making this a lifelong hobby, so I'll be around for a while. I'll try not to be too much of a nuisance.

Hi kyledonbaker. You'll find that they're a great bunch of really helpful people on here. And also amazingly talented. As a relative newcomer myself I've found the guild to be very welcoming and a great place for advice and to bounce ideas around. Welcome

Hello kyledonbaker! So you catched the - perhaps incurable - virus of map making. I hope you have fun and we will see your first maps soon!
I'm also working with Gimp and although I'm sometimes very annoyed with it and try different software I always come back to it in the end ... The wonderful thing is that you will find a lot of helpful tutorials for Gimp here.

Hey Kyle, glad to have you here. Have you regretted your player getting that sneak peek at the map yet?

We haven't actually started playing yet. But he did just get a quick look at the surrounding areas. Nothing his character wouldn't know about anyhow. It shouldn't cause too much trouble.

I don't know, those pesky PC's can be a lot of trouble.
