Okay, so here's the start of my thread. Just a placeholder for now, more will follow later

Alright, it looks like I'm going to get this started. This is a first layout of the map. The size and shape of the Principality of Belothler will be based on real-world Laos.

Here's my next couple of steps done. I've added some basic colour for terrain and ocean, laid out some rivers and added all cities, towns and castles. Light green is arable land and dark green is wilderness. There really are a shyte ton of castles so I'm going to do my best to come up with as many different purposes and I can, such as temples, famous battle sites (@Diamond Is that allowed?) and hopefully some other interesting stuff too.

    Yep, famous battle sites works.

And this looks really grand so far. Love the layout and colors, and your settlement distribution makes total sense.

Same as Diamond : the place you choose for your towns and castles is logical and smart, and the whole map sounds really promising, as usual

Thanks! I'm happy to hear the settlement distributions in sensible, it was something that I was quite unsure of.

Here's an update with some icons drawn. I wanted to do tiny illustrations, but at this size, and with this many castles, that might make the map look a bit messy. Maybe just stick to simple markers?

I like what you've got - those are great illustrations. It could get a bit crowded, yeah, but maybe just draw a little tower and have that as your castle icon? Small, but still recognizable, and would take up less room.

Here's an other update of my map with all labels in place. I filled up up all the 'castle' locations with castles, inns, holy sites/temples, famous battles, military camps, and two kinds of heathen monuments.

As it is now it's kind of busy and I think I'll at least try adding simple symbols like circles, triangles and squares.
