Thread: Kaidan Planet Map in Photo Real Style

Default Kaidan Planet Map in Photo Real Style

Working on nine planets and moons for my Kaidan Interstellar Empire of Japanese Horror (PFRPG). Because it is for a sci-fi setting, I opted to do this in my photo-realistic style, though I still don't prefer to create world maps very often, but for a setting guide I felt it necessary. I've been getting better at doing mountains, even including some undersea mount ranges.

Of course, I created this using vector software, Xara Designer Pro, which is a lot like Illustrator or CorelDraw, though the lite version, Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 365 for $49, can do this too. I use beveled shapes, mostly fractal color mixes with some use of photo-textures.

    Enjoy!

A minor(?) problem: Since your map has width:height proportions of 2:1, that suggests that you intended your map to be an equirectangular projection. Unfortunately, that would require the northern and southern parts of the map to be stretched more horizontally in order to map appropriately onto a sphere.

When mapped onto a sphere, its poles currently look like the images below. This problem is often called "polar pinch".

(I inserted a "?" above because I don't know how rigorous you want your map's projection to be.)

I'm aware of polar pinch - I have 3D software that does this kind of spherical wrapping.

Here's the Kappa world, a small moon, though it appears to have a lower hydrosphere, the main continent is 60% swampland, so a very wet place. Getting 1500 inches of rain per year, mostly in winter, but rains everyday. A tilt wobble that alters once per week, so despite have "four seasons" the temperature differential is about 20 degrees. This was a crater pitted airless moon, until ice meteors pocked the water leaving water to cover it. This planet is subjugated by the oni who test the planet and the people for their perverse experiments. The kappa have erected a circular pier surrounding the large crater bay.

Found an online tool that let's me convert my planet maps to planets, and will be using these in my upcoming setting guide...
