    Default Commission: Mummy's Lair

    Hi everyone! I miss you!

    Not long ago I got a chance to work with EN Publishing again and this time I decided I would try drawing the base map in actual ink on actual paper. All my commission work so far has been strictly digital, so this felt like a big step. After I roughed in the base map, I scanned it and painted it. Digitally. I'm still a ways from the watercolours

    Nice work Meshon
    It has a fun feel to it, as your maps often do.
    Did you find that doing the work traditionally first helped or hurt your workflow, from a time perspective?
    I found that I can do the initial pencil work a lot faster than if I was doing a straight digital piece.

    Cool! The 3D effect of your lights on the color frame is a nice touch. And your lineart is as always, very efficient.

    Nice work I do love these dungeon maps. And I already saw that you have a link to a tutorial, so, since I am trying to learn how to do these kind of maps, I'm going to that link right away!

    Perfect feeling ! I love how you made the grid so discreet on the corridor, it's a lovely detail

    I agree that the lines come in quicker on the paper. I'm not totally sure about why yet, I think it has to do with needing to accept the imperfections and embrace the wabi-sabi of hand-drawn work. There's also something about a more direct connection between me and the drawing, but I think this might require treading into metaphysical realms…

    Painting the gems around the outside of the border was my best learning experience in this map. I spent a long time working on one of them, zoomed right in, trying different highlights, looking at reference pictures… and then I thought, heck, I'm going to paint ALL of them, even though this one I'm working on doesn't seem good enough, and then I'll see how the whole thing looks. And I did that and it felt okay.
