    Default *** January 2019 Challenge: Map A Dystopia ***

Hey guys! Long time no see!

Since we are now officially living in the year Blade Runner took place in, I thought we'd do a map challenge where we map dystopias. They could be of your own imagining - you could map a great elven forest after dwarven industrialism poisons all the trees, or the irradiated ruins of some ancient city, or the orbits of satellites where all that remains of mankind look down on their dead Earth. Or you could map something from your favorite YA or adult dystopia novel/film.

The subject matter and mapping style is completely up to you, as long as it fits the bill in some way of being a dystopia.

This Challenge will end on Thursday, 31st January, at about 9PM Pacific time. The winner will receive the very first Golden Compass of 2019, and tears in the rain.

And also remember 2019 is also the setting for Running Man with Arnold:

Yep, it's time for suppression of the Bakersfield food riots (it's of interest to me because it's only about a hundred miles away from me and if you've ever been to Bakersfield, you've come face-to-face with a oil-and-ag-driven dystopia with the oligarchs ruthlessly suppressing the peasants).

Thanks, K. I do hope you find the time; your maps are always awesome and inspirational. Side question: if you had your own country, would it be called The Kellericanate?

Yep, good idea. I'd love to see a map of Neo-Tokyo.

And that's a great article, thanks for sharing it!

That was a good article. I remember my mom renting that movie for me when I was like 9 or 10 because it was a cartoon. I watched it and had no idea what was really going on but thought it was cool as hell. I have no doubt if she knew the contents she wouldn't have rented it lol.

This sounds like a great challenge. I would like to say one thing though; a dystopia usually refers to a society and not just to a physical area. a typical definition is "... a community or society that is undesirable or frightening." So, I think something like the ruins of a city or world would by classified more as a post-apocalyptic style map than a dystopian one.

Diamond mixed the dystopia and post-apocalyptic genre.
I think it's because many post-apoplectic setting are also dystopian but these are not the same thing.
