The final version (2000x2000) of the sample map I made using my Van der Aa brush set. There's a larger version on my blog. Eventually, I'm going to figure out a way to automate the water effect I'm using on the rivers because 1) I really like it 2) I've seen it used on a lot of early-18th and 17th-century maps and 3) seems like it should be solvable.

Instead of filling, contracting and deleting, can't you just stroke, contract, stroke, contract etc? You can even create a automated script for that in PS, and then just do the distort thingy afterwards. If I'm not mistaken, Schwarzkreuz did something like that, but I remember trying it (ages ago), with very mixed results. Worth the try though!
