Good question... German is the language i'm most familiar with outside of English. It seems to be 3 words. "nacht" "schrecken" and "irgendwas". So, I know 'nacht' is night, and I know 'irgendwo' is everywhere so I can conclude 'irgendwas' is a different state of the same word. "Schreken" reminds me of 'shriek' so I assume that it basically means the omni-present unnerving dread of being in the night, a German way of saying, perhaps, "things that go bump in the night". That's my guess.

And of course feel free to practice your English, as we all speak and write it here, but I get so little opportunity to use the bit of German I know, because it's mostly useless in Canada so I could not resist trying to compose a couple of sentences. (should have learned French!) It would also be useless if I visited Germany because everyone speaks either English or French or both... and wants to practice. C'est la vie! It is sometimes useful when I watch movies with German villains who have untranslated dialogue though!

The name isn't a word that exists in common German language as it is. The seperate words translate to "Night" "horror" and "something". I guess I'd translate it freely to "An undefined nightmare". Let's see what Nachtschreckenirgendwas says.

Every single one of your translations sounds about right, but this seems like the most fitting.
I feel like I should explain the story behind it, although it really isn't that special.

So a few years ago, me and my group of friends were playing a TTRPG and our party was being hunted my some kind of monster hiding in the forest.
One of us (the low Int fighter) tried to explain to the rest that he saw a "beast of the night...kinda..uhhh…thingy…" and I found that expression to be
so hilarious that it just kept sticking to my mind, and I guess since then I've been using that as a nickname.

Like I said, nothing special.
