Default Mar/April '20 Lite Challenge: Caliolean

    Caliolean

    1) I have no idea if time wise I can finish this the way I want, but should have something presentable by the end
    2) I have no idea if my computer can pull off such a large photo realistic project, we will see
    3) The water is just thrown in right now to add some contrast.
    4) The Island is pretty much just the first draft right now. I want more rocky ledges in the basic landscape, and more variation in the terrain, so will be cutting those in.
    5) Obviously I have only just begun on the trees, house, etc. I really wish I could force myself to reuse assets I made before, but no, I always have to recreate new ones(such an idiot sometimes). The house I put in may actually be an old watch tower, with other dwellings throughout the Island lost in and amongst the trees.

Welcome to the challenge Kier. I like how the elevations almost look like contour lines come to life.

You should make a folder specifically for your art assets and save them there so you can reuse them easily. You're only an idiot if you're doing unnecessary work over and over again. It's okay to want unique assets for a map, but, with your style and your specific hustle it will slow you down. All of us have modified assets for reuse, I bet.

I like the contour effect and your trees. I don't think you'll pull it off in five days, but, it'll be useful to you in the future.

    Thanks Bogie.

Yeah, Tiana, I have folders upon folders, lol. The big problem is each time I think I have a great selection of trees, 25 or so unique ones, with 4-6 mods each, I learn something new, and start all over again. I always feel I can do better, better trees, better houses, more realistic, etc. So I end up redoing everything, well not everything, but a quite a lot. Thanks.

Got a little done today, Beginning to take some form.

I removed the water for now to save memory on the working file. Adding some fields some buildings and trees. Added some more texture to the grass beneath the upper level of trees. The tower still needs a little work and a shadow, but the concept of the Island is beginning to develop.

Such a tiny little island. you've rendered the altitude really well. I can get a good sense of elevation despite the top down view.

Thanks TimetoDraw. It is small for sure. Not 100% sure on the size, probably a little over an acre, acre and 1/4 maybe. If it took the whole grid, it would be about 2 acres.

Trying not to overcrowd it and keep things to scale, not sure how that is going to work, lol.

Here we go again. Another day, another update.

Not 100% sure on some of this. Cut some more rocks in, and some dirt around the field. Cut the beginning of a beach in, going to pull a boat up there maybe or maybe lose the beach altogether, lol.

My big concern is the trees, I added some dirt around their bases, I like some a lot, not others. Looking a little too "parky" for me and not dense enough for a forest maybe? I don't know it might just be the dirt beneath I am not fond of.

I'd say your size estimates are reasonably close, and given that, I don't know that it should necessarily look forestry per-si. Maybe if you added in some stumps (I.e. the trees that were cut down for building material) it might have a better feel of having once been more heavily forested.

Overall, I would say that it looks good and that you are making fine progress. If I had to nitpick anything it would be that the grid, at least what is directly on the island, is a bit distracting for me. Also, i think a water texture/coloring would really bring this home. Other than that, fine work.

I\ll second Greason, what is the purpose of the grid? A scale at the bottom would remove the need for it?

The trees and dirt are absolutely fine. And the density is fine too, how about altering the colour of the grass in and around the trees to ever so slightly darker or lighter greens. That will give a stronger outline and more foresty look without adding more trees.

Regardless, I think it's looking great, especially once you add the water again. Maybe avoid too much detail in the water so that the island is the clear focus of the map.
