Welcome to the challenge Arimel! Off to a good start. I like your background story.
So here a start at my entry for this challenge. I am going to use the provided shape as a medium sized landmass that was once occupied by a single nation. Civil war erupted though and the nation split into two distinct segments. The land in between has become a giant swamp (some of the central 'holes' in the shape are lakes in the swamp). A desert covers their northern frontier. And from here it is still in the creation process.

Sounds like a cool back story - and looks like a good start

Ok! An Update!
I have had this complete (to this stage) for two days now but my schedule has overrun me, allowing me to only post it now. I will have quite a bit of time over the next week though so the map should progress quickly from here.

The mountains are looking good!

Another update. This has taken far longer to do than I wish to admit... I had dotted in the edges of the center parts of the given shape but it is not too obvious in b/w. Once color is added (if I can get it in on time) I hope those shapes should be more obvious.

I also have plans to try and put labels on the map digitally, a first attempt at that. Again though, this will be time dependent. I honestly don't know where the daylight hours are going.
Incredible amount of detail you are creating there!

Oh man! Yours forests are looking very good. As Bogie said, the level of details in the map makes it very interesting.

Thank you both! Here is the next update. I have two snippet images as well to help show some of the details my camera just can't pick out (and to help with the low lighting here).
