Scorpian though is a typo - I guess that just shows how I tend to pronounce it .

It is not a typo. You see, in a medieval world (where dictionaries couldn't be bought at the market), words were often spelled the way they sounded. So it is safe to say the locals of Scorpian Wastes pronounce it as "Scorpian" rather than "Scorpion". I wouldn't be surprised if the locals spelled it "Q" or "K" instead of a "C".
