Default March 22 Challenge - Mountain of Fire: Gate to Muspel

For this challenge I am taking some inspiration from one of my favorite authors: the far too well kept secret, Gene Wolfe. While he is most famous (deservedly so) for his Book of the New Sun books, I am taking on a setting from his more faerie tale-like Wizard Knight books. This portrays the Mountain of Fire, gate to Muspel - the 6th lowest of the 7 worlds of the story - and the home of the dragon, Setr, and his kin.

Here's my start, crafted in Gaea. I will use this as a base, and work from here in Gimp.

Thanks! I'm finding Gaea a lot of fun to play with.

Here's my latest WIP. Started working on the crater interior and some shading on the slopes.

Here's my latest WIP (and possibly final, given the deadline and a busy schedule). I purposely understated the map elements and focused on the frame around the Mountain of Fire to give the impression of the eye of the dragon Setr, so its a bit more artsy than map-like. I'm not sure whether or not I like it, but it was a bit of an experiment in any case.
