Wip [WIP] The World of Gythea - globe/regions/countries/climate/cultures ect.

    Hi,

I've decided to start a new theard about my own fantasy world - Gythea, because my project has started to be a huuuge worldbuilding adventure. My goal is to create a very immersive, real looking fantasy world which is full of nations, cultures and stories.

Here you can see some maps, which I've created already

The globe with a simplified topographic map of oceans:

Nice job, I would pay more attention to the circulation of the ocean currents as I believe there could be some nderwater continental shelves that could block the passage of current especially in the narrow passages and thus allowing more circular cycles than passages.

For several months I have been working on the beginning of my huuuge cartographic project which is the altas of my personal world - Gythea. It was an intense few months but I can slowly start to show you what I have created. At the beginning I would like to show you the general legend for my future maps and the basic information about the world. I hope you enjoy!

It's a great map, with tons of impressive detail! Your rivers seem to behave perfectly well too. All in all a gorgeous map to wander around on. All it lacks is a legend explaining the height colours, but I'm sure that can be easily fixed.

A tip for future maps (or maybe an update of this map): have you ever considered adding shaded relief to the terrain? Shouldn't be too difficult since you already have the contour lines: just turn these colours in different levels of grey (black for sea level, white for the tippy tops of the mountains) and pull that through Photoshop's Lighting Effects. I can give a more detailed overview of the process if you're interested. If you go this route though, know that you'll have to blur the end result a fair bit to get rid of the inevitable steps, bit it might still be worth the hassle. Certainly worth the try: if it's underwhelming you know you can just leave it off, and if it does indeed add something you can go and do this for all your future maps too!

Your work is amazing, I love the info/regional map, and love the shapes in the world map. Did you base your world on Tectonics or just from scratch?

I try to balance both things in my work My goal is to create the most reliable world as possible, but with the fantasy elements.

Today I want to show you my new map of the southern neighbour of Haalthan - Fartisia.

Love the progress on this so far! These atlas maps really always inspire me to do more of my own mapping. That's a great style and I love all the info added to the maps. That said, perhaps it would make sense to have a different country name than... Fartisia? Maybe I'm just too immature for this forum but I can't help but snicker just a little bit whenever I read the name of the country or the language.

I second that, must admit I had a wee snicker too lol. However I love the overall style and colours you use. I was wondering do you just make your names up from scratch or do you have any inspiration from elsewhere?
