It looks to me like the light source illuminating the planets is mostly above (from the perspective of the viewer) rather than coming from the star itself. When I look at the original map, there's a pretty distinct dark side to each planet, on the side facing away from the star, so that from the viewer's perspective, they are all half illuminated. Did that help?

I see, I'll try darkening the shadows a bit and see how it looks.
