    Default The Most Random Map

Not much to say about this one, fellows.

2023 was a busy year for me commission wise, but for the first time since I started as a freelancer I actually have been doing anything but my usual fantasy maps. For a bit I was glad for the change, but after a while, I found myself missing them. So when I had some time between work, I wanted to make another map in my most basic parchment style, just for fun.

I didn't actually have any ideas for this beyond wanting to make "a map" so I started by creating a new PS canvas, and then closing my eyes and splashing some brushstrokes on it at random to create starting point, and created a sketch based on the shapes. I'll post some WIP shots in the next post, just because I actually have some for once

    Anyways, here's the map.

Here's some WIP shots, as promised. The first image is the aforementioned random brushwork I did with my eyes closed, the rest is what followed from there.

Awesome as always and process in interesting too. I little envy how you place biomes right in early stage and it works Looking forward to your commission projects, Akhtar and others - very interested to see your new drawing styles!

    Thanks, guys!

Don't hold your breath on those other commissions yet though - the majority of them have been done for TTRPG publications that are still in developement, and I'm not allowed to share them until they're out... and from the looks of it might be a while yet

Nice of you to show your process! It can be really refreshing to "just" do a random map once in a while. And it shows your grat ability, congrats!

That's crazy that you can turn random brush strokes into a full-on fantasy map.

    What program do you use?

You do better work with your eyes closed than many can do with their eyes open.
