Thread: Sword Coast Regional Map

    Map Sword Coast Regional Map

This was a fairly quick project for a friend's D&D game. They were looking for a hand-drawn style map of the Sword Coast region of Faerun around Phandalin for a playthrough of Lost Mines of Phandelver combined with the longer Tyranny of Dragons campaign with a few specific additions.

This is the first regional map I've drawn in over a decade, and I experimented with a few different things. It was also just prior to my joining the Guild a few weeks ago, so there are some details that I would do differently if I were to draw it again (I'd like to try a different style for my mountains and forests). But it was a useful exercise and showed me how fast I could complete a map (less than four hours) if I set my mind to it.

The map was drawn in pencil, with some details inked in Micron pen. Editing and image clean up after scanning was completed in the GIMP. I'll follow-up with a post on this thread of the ultimate final product, with the map printed on a parchment-style paper as a handout by my friend.

It looks great printed. Very authentic in-game feel.

Thank you Turambar! I did it the weekend before I stumbled on the guild, so plenty of detail things that I will try to do differently on the next iteration, but I figure it looks like the type of map an adventurer with some basic drawing skills could jot down with imperfect tools. Thanks again for the kind words!

It looks great and I am glad you found the guild! There are many great maps to inspire here as well as tutorials. One other tutorial source that i have found invaluable as I improve my map drawing skills has been the tutorials on mapeffects.com
