Wip Dec 24/Jan/Feb 25 Lite Challenge: Port Sialus

    What's that old saying?

If you ain't gonna go big, don't go at all.

    Well, I went big.

As I mentioned in the prompt thread, I dislike doing cities. For me the problem is that I can't picture them in my head like I can with dungeon or terrain maps. Still, I've been working on a setting that will eventually need a port city, so....

I did cheat a bit and use Watabou's city generator to get a base model to work from, and have spent around 20 hours on this so far. The coloring is crude, but all the city blocks north of the river have been drawn in.

I use that Watabou generator quite a bit; it's kind of a lifesaver.

    Map's looking good!

Welcome to the party GW! One of the reasons for the Challenges is to push us to create maps that we might not normally do so that we improve our skills and techniques.
The map is looking good, you certainly went big!

Thanks, Simkin, Mr. D, and Mr. B.

Some fairly significant progress over the last few days (and hopefully tomorrow as well). Got the rest of the buildings outlined south of the river (which has been removed while I try to decide what I am going to do about the ground effects) and started coloring in the rooftops.

On a fairly positive note, I am getting a better feel for how I want to go about drawing cities that, hopefully, won't make them so frustrating for me.

Oh, nice! They have a kind of terra-cotta look to them.

That wasn't intentional, but now that you pointed it out...

More progress. Although a bit tedious, the rooftops are coming along, and the map, as a whole, is progressing faster than I thought it would. Not sure I am entirely happy with the way those stone walls are looking, so may have another go at them once that last batch of rooftops are complete. Need to add a manor house, the docks, color in some roads and add some farmland. Then, of course, some lore, but have an inkling of an idea about that.

Also, as a side note, this is at half my working size and three quarters of what my final version will be posted at.

Welp, all the buildings except those that I still need to add are colored in. Tried adding a hint of sand to the river's edge but not completely sold on that just yet, and still need to do something about those stone walls. Still, progress is progress, right?
