    I've got tree brushes of various styles with a dark colour and scatter settings that I use to create a base for the trees. I then go round and clean that up, delete errant trees that land in the ocean etc. I then use that as a clipping mask and go over with a lighter greener colour to give the forests some texture. Then I go over that once more with another brush individually adding lighting to add a bit of height and show the terrain. Then I tweak levels/saturation/etc and add shadows to each tree

    Wow. That is a crap ton of work, but it definitely pays off.
