Thread: Hello

    Post Hello

I arrived at this site from several directions at once. I'm an avid roleplayer and have recently been playing games that encourage group map making as setting creation (Red Box Hack and Storming the Wizard's Tower.) I'm also an anthropologist looking for new ways to display data. This lead me to Edward Tufte and studies of visual literacy. And on top of that, I spend a lot of time playing with mind map design.

I have very little experience with image creation/manipulation software but I'm excited about learning. I downloaded GIMP last night and am going through tutorials now. I'm also going to be doing a bit of research on cartography to go along with my practice.

I'm looking forward to spending time here. Thanks for creating and participating in this very informative and creative community!

Heh, I'm just starting on the GIMP tutorials. I'll start on these after I get the basics of that down. Ok, maybe not. Already trying the compass rose.

Here are two tuts that I believe any gimpuser in particular (and any one in general) should have a go through soonest.

    Layer Masks by jfrazierjr
    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=3143

A great guide to using layers to create effects and stuff

    and

Using GIMP to Create an Artistic Regional RPG Map by Gimp Master RobA
    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=1142

It might look intimidating for a new Gimp user, but there are sooooo many things to learn about Gimp in this tut. It is well written I think and plenty of examples, and easy to follow. Read the whole thread if you have questions because many before you have asked and answers are aplenty. Ask in the thread if there are any questions after that and you will be pleasantly surprised how quick the responses come.

    Enjoy your stay

    Welcome to the Guild, Dave.

Tufte's books are wonderful and (IMO) a must read for anyone who wants to present graphical information.

Enjoy the Guild, and don't forget that you should feel free to post non-fantasy maps here too if you want.
