Alright, so I've started using RobA's Using GIMP to Create an Artistic Regional Map tutorial on my Dark Fantasy map, and here's what I have so far!
and this is with the original AutoREALM map on top.
Y'all are quite right, I am mixing using a mixture of political and physical boundaries and should clean that up to make the map clearer.
As for the mouth of the river is an error from AutoREALM due to how the line types work with in it.
Hopefully I can get a day or three free to clean things up. Thanks for all the input!
I'm hacking my way into the cartographical realm with AutoRealm, AutoCAD, GIMP, and Google Sketchup as my tools!

A bad attempt at mountains and forests... going to have to redo these but definitely learning from 'em.

Alright gave the mountain another go, and I think they look much better despite being slightly boring. Not sure if its the bump map or what, but I the mountains are getting much individuality.

Coolness. AutoRealms is a nice attempt but ultimately not very useful. I gotta say your Gimp attempt looks pretty nice already. Keep up posting wip's, I really like to see how other people are working, and how their maps evolve.
Thanks.
You're very much correct AutoRealm. I was hoping for alittle more CAD like functionality and didn't get it. Though if I do more world building I'll might use AutoRealm to generate the coast lines as its Fractal line makes great random coast lines.

The mountains in RobA's tutorial are often the biggest stumbling block for people the first few times trying to use it - it was for me.
Keep plugging away or look through the tutorials section again, I'm fairly certain there are some other mountain tutorials you can try.

It looks like your mountain bump-map is missing the gray-scale variability from the random cloud layer. The gray-scale cloud layer is what gives the bump-map the randomized-looking peaks and valleys in RobA's tutorial. I'd look more closely at that.
If I was anywhere near close to perfecting my own technique for mountains, I'd share that with you but, alas, I am not thusly close as yet.
I think, therefore I am a nerd.

Pimping my worldmap here. Still WIP... long way to go, but I'm pretty proud of what I've done so far...

Alright, haven't had much time to play with this map recently... I did slap on some political goodness to help show the borders a bit better.
