Greetings and Welcome to the guild. Reverse engineering maps is much easier if you try and track down the artist for tips. Hey finding your own style cant be all that bad.
Hello everyone.
I've gotta say this is a great resource, I was beginning to think the internet finally ceased being useful after searching for sites specifically devoted to map making, at least map making as it relates to gaming, and finding none. At least until I stumbled on this site, thanks.
I create maps that are used in a game designed to teach tactics.
This is a link to some screenshots:

All of the maps were created by me except for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th maps in the second row, and the 1st map in the third row.
Two things that I'm looking to improve are my buildings and forest areas. I've tried to "reverse engineer" the maps that aren't mine but without any luck. Looks like I'll have to develop my own techniques.
I've used a map relief shading technique that I found here:

For my hills. Although the elevation lines may be distracting they are essential to the game and teaching tactics.

Greetings and welcome to the clan of Red.
Welcome to the Guild! You have a style similar to what Gamerprinter uses in his elevation maps. If you want to see some of his stuff you can start at his user profile:

And then search for his posts. You can also simply go to the VTT forums and search for threads started by him. Most will be in that style.
That is a great tutorial you linked to! Have some rep for the great contribution.
Thanks guys.
I will be sure to checkout GP's stuff.
