Looks interesting, i'll give it that.
A new game comes out in a couple days called Anno 1404 - Dawn of Discovery.
Looking at screenshots (regardless of how the game plays), I'm now wondering if it might be used for some mapping in sandbox mode. Here are some screenshots here...

I love city-builders and world-builders and such so I'll certainly be getting this one. The art looks awesome.

The graphics are quite nice, but its a RTS, aka "Clickfest" - UGH!
It appears that at least the harbors are customizable within the game, so their may be hope regarding the mapping aspects.

Even if you use those screenies as reference material then it has merit. The game and engine seems to provide extremely good quality playable area. No idea what the game is like of course but it might hold up as a mapping tool.
actually the Anno games do have an element of RTS, but its more about Settling islands, Trading with other players and developing your outposts.
((sorry the gamer in me beat the luker))
and those graphics are really really good,
The screenies are beautiful. From a mapping point of view though, although the individual buildings are lovely, the arrangement can only be on a square grid which is a bit of shame.
I have played all the Anno games and they are very laid back. It's all about settling islands, trading stuff and getting your people happy, so you unlock more buildings. Combat (which is basically where the RTS part kicks in) comes mostly late in the game as building a sizable army and having the ships to transport them, takes loads of times.
The game could be used for mapping purposes I guess... it can be compared a bit to the Sim City games.

Gandwarf has fallen into shadow...
I considered picking up today. The standard version that's in stores here comes at 35 EUR which is VERY reasonable if it's half as much fun as 1701 AD was (I'd mostly play without wars and just settle my islands - I prefer builder games).
