Welcome Vestrial! Once you have a map you want to share, be sure to post it on the forum.
As for CC3: did you watch the video tutorials on YouTube? Within half an hour you should have a pretty good understanding of the software.
So I recently picked up the DM mantle for my group (Earthdawn), and have been sorely disappointed with most of the maps in the supplements (and my players are based out of a home-brew city so that doesn't help).
Through sheer chance I found this site, and am sure glad I did! The amount of info you all have available is staggering. I've been slowly working my way through some of the tutorials, so hopefully soon I'll have some nice maps for my game...
I picked up CC3 and GIMP. Based on first impressions, I think I prefer GIMP a bit, if for no other reason than it's learning curve seems a bit more forgiving of those of us with limited time. I think I'll try to produce at least one complete map in both so I can make an informed decision...
Expect to see more noob questions popping up in your threads...

We have a bunch of forums dedicated to just that (WIPs) devided up into the various types of maps (Regional, City, Dungeon ect..) and you will be very pleasently surprised how quickly your mapping skills will increase from all the suggestions and critiques you will recieve.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I've been mostly reading up and watching some Tutorials. I'm going to actually try to create a couple maps in the next day or two in GIMP and CC3 to see which I like better. I'll post my embarrassing results when I'm done...
We'll decide if they are embarrassing or not, don't you worry about that
