I have to admit I dont know whats going on in detail with this map but I think you have a great grasp of numerous difficult concepts so good luck with this and ill rep you for it.
Well, it's taken some effort, but attached is the results of various experiments I've done in the past couple weeks.
The base map is equirectangular, and it was remapped through Hugin to produce this equal area projection. Then I overlayed the North American map (also from an equirectangular projection). The darker latitude and longitude are the equator and the prime meridian.
The irregular area around 75E 60N was created by taking a real-world height map and manually pixelating it according to my map key.
While a lot of detail needs to be filled in, I'm satisfied to reach this point. The map doesn't show much detail, but does provide a lot of information. See my wiki for some background information.
If you would like an explanation of why or how I did certain things, feel free to ask. I always welcome feedback, positive and negative, but I have my reasons for practically everything I did for this map.

Thank you.
The basic idea is a map that displays information so that people can take sections of it to develop regional maps. Comparing it to the map of North America not only shows scale, but provides a real life reference for development. (Though the equators do not align on this map so climate relations don't match.) While I have no objection to being artistic, I think too many mapmakers go overboard on the art and don't provide enough useful information. It's possible I go too far the other way and try to cram too much information into my maps.
I've been looking at the tutorials and other maps on the site and getting a very good idea of things I want to change and do for future development. I've also been experimenting with layers, masks, paths, and channels on the logo for my wiki and learning a great deal that will be useful on future maps.
My greatest wish as the moment is a utility for generating crumple or wrinkle textures.

I did a quick Google search and came up with this.
Now these are for Photoshop but most of the techniques should be translatable to GIMP.
