There's one called Carta, too, but it's like modern highway map icons.

I converted that Carta TTF to a varicolor CC3 symbol catalog for modern overland maps. You can download it here:

I love that autorealm TTF, especially the shipwreck symbol. I'll have to convert that to a CC3 symbol catalog next!

Is this font freeware we are allowed to post here though? (i.e., can we legally distribute it on this list and can I distribute my a CC3 symbol catalog derived from it?)

AutoRealm is open-source under the GNU license. As such, it should not infringe anything to convert the font and make the new symbol set available to others.

Carta, on the other hand, is an Adobe font and has a much stronger license. That license is here: http://www.paratype.com/help/license/linotype.asp .

    Good to honor licenses.

However, it's very simple to make little vector icons and convert them into a font.

    And nobody really owns icons.

As usual, there's a gray line in the middle.

I believe the version of the Carta font I used for my CC3 symbols is a freeware "knock off" of the Adobe version, not the original, looking at the info inside the TTF file. I have made some symbol catalogs from commercial TTFs that require a license for personal use only that I would never distribute (either the TTF file, or the symbol catalog FSC file).

And FYI: I've converted the AutoREALM TTF to a varicolor CC3 symbol catalog now too:

    Enjoy!
