Hey Vorro, I have been trying to see if I can help by sketching some things but I'm still not really satisfied either.
I'll post it here anyways. Maybe it will be helpful in some way.
I did this all as an overlay on the map you posted at the beginning of the thread.
Apologies for scribbling on your map. I did it on there so I could see side by side what your land shapes were.

The closest I've come to working in this style was when I was doing those middle earth maps a while back.
They're not really caterpillar though so I didn't link to them as an example.

unfortunately i cant rep you again, but thanks for that The mountains aren't exactly in the style i was looking for, but the shadows/highlights in the Mors mtns (lower right) are just what i was going to do. I think ill try out the Dinotopia style and see which i prefer, or maybe go for a cross,
