Oh, I'm still at it. I'm still keeping with the minimalism. I figured out the issue with my jungle, and I knew it was going to be a simple issue. I'm starting to add the roads now. After that, I still have labeling, and finishing touches, and then this map will be complete. I'm on the home stretch!

Continuing my work on this map. I have finished my roads, and have started on my text labels. Now, I went with the red, because the cartouche that came with these symbols has the red N for North. I thought that using the red would meld the cartouche to the rest of the map. But now I'm not so sure I like the red. Or maybe it's the font I don't like. I will play around with it, and see what I decide.
Feedback is always welcome.

For what it's worth:
I normally find that red lettering works better with a light-colored outline
(slightly off-white or a very pale pink, or even a very pale amber).
I may try that. I tried a white outline, but because of my color washing, it became the background paper texture. I'm also thinking of changing the font, because it seems hard to read here, even though it was fairly easy to read in cc3+

For what it's worth, I find both the red color and the font a bit of a strain to read. Sometimes it's good to consider that the point of a text is to relay information more than to just set a graphical style. Servus!

Another point that color blind individuals have mentioned here before is that red on green can be near impossible for them to see. Other than that this is coming together.

Mark, I agree with what you said. I slept on it and decided to change the font to something easier to read, because the more I looked at it, the less I liked it.
And Jax, you brought up a point I didn't even think of! Okay, I guess the red of the compass is going to be the only red in this map. I need to find another color. One that won't stand out crazily with the color wash, but will still be easy to read. And nothing that will mess with those that have a hard time seeing different colors. Maybe a navy blue? with a light blue glow? hmmmmm.... I will have to see.

I personally don't like red as a label colour. Maybe a darker red would be better?
The most problematic (hardest to read) is definitely the name over the mountains.
Unless you apply an effect under the text to blur the mountains
or move the text aside so it doesn't overlap with the mountains.
And the issue is the same with the forests.

I think Torstan had a tutorial on labels and how to make readable ones but it's been a long time since I've read that one. If I find it I'll come back and post a link.
edit: Found it..sort of..if you go to this link and then download the pdf document at the bottom of the list you can go to the section on labels. It's not a huge amount of info but it may be helpful. I don't think the links in the link I gave you work because I couldn't seem to find the label section that way. Thank goodness for the pdf working.
