Thanks! I'll give that a go this evening.
OK - attached is a script. It uses the upper LH corner of the image to determine the background colour.
It is best to set the Threshold slider as high as possible and keep the shrink size as small as possible to avoid translucent parts of the image.

Random Non-Mapping related GIMP question:
In the tool box, I still got my tools, but I've lost the settings for them(usually below it), how do I get them back?

I think they can be torn off so check under help>recently closed dialogs (or something) and you should be able to bring them back (no gimp handy on this computer.... sorry)
