Wow, this is quite exciting! I worked on an archaeological dig in Orvieto a few years ago, and so I'm really interested to see a map of the medieval city. And I know that there aren't any cartographers who could do it better than you

Looking forward to watching the progress on this one.

Just because you mentioned it, did that archeological dig reveal anything interesting about the period of time i'm going to draw? And if yes, is it possible to find the results anywhere on the internet?

I'm afraid not. The archaeology was concerned with the Roman and Etruscan history, not the medieval. And only one of the sites was inside the historic area of the city - the rest were in the surrounding villages and farmland.

I can tell you that we were excavating a Roman cistern underneath a house - most houses had them - and that this is where the Orvietans kept their water right through to the middle ages. But I'm not sure if that is helpful at all...

That is definitely helpful, since the widespread use of Cisterns also during the middle ages makes a lot of sense on a plateau mountain with (as i can imagine) very few - if any - natural springs. The use of cisterns surely had an impact on house designs as well, gotta do some reasearch about that then.

Therefore thanks a lot for the information .

Can I still suggest a map? If so, I'd love to the a map of 15th-16th century Utrecht!

And great work! It's nice to get a peak at how much time and research goes into these maps. I like the beginning of you Orvieto map and I'm sure it will be another masterpiece!

    Nononono! August 1674, for Drama!
(Because somehow, even the church's museum doesn't seem to have a map from that time. And there are lots of engravings/paintings/drawings for map research.)
